Ingredients:
- 1 clove fresh garlic
- Juice of ½ fresh lemon
- 1 cup (240 mL) lukewarm water
- Optional: 1 teaspoon honey (if you prefer a milder taste)
Instructions:
- Crush or finely mince the garlic and let it sit for about 10 minutes. This helps form allicin, one of garlic’s active compounds.
- Squeeze the lemon juice into the water.
- Add the garlic and stir well.
- If desired, add honey.
- Drink immediately.
Does it support heart health?
There is no strong evidence that drinking lemon and garlic together on an empty stomach provides unique heart-health benefits.
However:
- Garlic has been studied more extensively and may produce a small reduction in blood pressure and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol when consumed regularly, particularly in standardized garlic supplements rather than homemade drinks.
- Lemon provides vitamin C and antioxidants and can be part of a heart-healthy diet, but there is no evidence that lemon water alone improves heart health.
The biggest benefits for heart health still come from:
- Eating plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes.
- Limiting saturated fat, trans fat, and excess salt.
- Exercising regularly.
- Not smoking.
- Managing blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and body weight.
Precautions
- Garlic may cause heartburn, stomach irritation, or bad breath, especially on an empty stomach.
- Garlic can increase the risk of bleeding, particularly if you take blood thinners such as warfarin or have surgery scheduled.
- Lemon juice is acidic and may worsen acid reflux or gradually erode tooth enamel. Drinking through a straw and rinsing your mouth with water afterward can help reduce enamel exposure.
This drink can be enjoyed if you like it, but it should be viewed as part of an overall healthy diet rather than a proven remedy for preventing or treating heart disease.
